5 Signs You Need to Replace Your Chain Link Fence

Rust, sagging posts, and gaps at the base are early warning signs. Here's how to tell if it's time for a replacement instead of a repair.

Rust and corrosion

If you see orange-brown flaking on the wire mesh or posts, moisture has already gotten under the galvanized coating. Surface rust can be treated, but once it eats into the wire strands, the fence loses strength and needs replacing.

Leaning or wobbly posts

Push on a post — if it moves more than an inch or two at the top, the concrete footing has likely cracked or shifted. This is common after heavy rain or ground movement and usually means a new post, not a patch.

Sagging or stretched mesh

Chain link that's lost its diamond shape and sags between posts has stretched past the point of re-tensioning. Wire ties alone won't fix this.

Gaps at the ground line

Erosion or settling can open a gap under the fence line, which is both a security issue and an easy entry point for animals.

Fence is 15+ years old

Even well-maintained galvanized fencing has a service life. If yours is well past a decade and showing two or more of the signs above, replacement is usually more cost-effective than ongoing repairs.
